Flashpoint Building Systems is setting a new standard in the fast-paced construction world, where every minute counts and precision is paramount. With their innovative approach to creating building plans and kits, they are transforming how contractors and builders approach construction projects. By combining cutting-edge technology with practical solutions, Flashpoint Building Systems is addressing some of the most pressing challenges in the industry today.

The Origins of Innovation

The story of Flashpoint Building Systems begins with a problem that’s all too familiar to anyone in the construction industry: labor shortages and inadequate plan sets. For founders Nick Stoppello and his longtime friend and business partner Pat Churchman, the frustrations of traditional construction methods were a constant topic of discussion. Both brought complementary backgrounds in construction to the table, and their shared experiences led them to a groundbreaking idea.

“Construction has always been plagued by a lack of skilled labor and issues with plan sets that are often more confusing than helpful,” Nick explained. “We knew there had to be a better way to streamline the process and make things easier for everyone on site.”

The Birth of the Integrated Layout System (ILS)

That “better way” materialized as the Integrated Layout System (ILS), Flashpoint’s patented process that revolutionizes how building plans are implemented on-site. Instead of relying on traditional paper plans and manual layout processes, Flashpoint laser etches building information directly onto the subfloor. This innovative method skips the layout process entirely, allowing vertical construction to begin the same day.

The ILS starts by acquiring permit-ready drawings from the design team. Flashpoint then overlays these drawings from multiple disciplines into a single, cohesive document. Critical keynotes and symbols are converted into text instructions, which are then laser-engraved onto the subfloor. The result is a subfloor package delivered to the site, where contractors assemble it like a puzzle.

“Each piece is clearly labeled, making it easy to know exactly where everything goes,” Nick said. “It’s like putting together a giant, real-life puzzle, but with all the instructions right there in front of you.”

Overcoming Challenges with Technology

Flashpoint’s journey to perfecting its system wasn’t without its challenges. In the early days, they experimented with various methods to project and print large-scale layouts onto subfloor materials. The initial idea of using ink markings proved problematic (like hundreds of dried-out Sharpies problematic), leading the team to explore more durable and precise options. Eventually, they landed on the idea of using a CO2 laser to burn the information into the subfloor sheets.

“The CO2 laser was a game-changer for us,” Nick noted. “It solved the problem of durability and accuracy that we were struggling with, and it made the entire process much more efficient.”

Their persistence paid off, and Flashpoint Building Systems quickly gained recognition in the industry. They won awards at both local and national levels, including first place in the Boise Entrepreneur Week pitch competition and the most innovative construction tool award at the International Builders Show in Las Vegas. This recognition helped propel the company from residential projects to commercial opportunities, allowing them to scale their business and expand their reach.
